audience reception

1) The preferred reading of a media text is what the producer intends for the meaning of their product to be.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                            2)The oppositional reading of a text opposes what the producer intended to convey.                                                                                                                                                                                                3)The Harry Brown trailer  positions the audience to think that young people are destructive, violent and reckless and all of the antagonists are teenagers or young adults.                                                                                                                                                                                                                          4)Young people are associated with other young people and so they know people who deviate from the stereotype of all younger people being violent, furthermore they wouldn't be examples of this stereotype  themselves.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                    5) The background of the image is dark and plain to make the brightly coloured burger the most significant thing in the image. The burger patties have a slight sheen to make them stand out more and look appetising to the audience. The catchphrase is designed to appeal to a mass audience as it shows how convenient it is to get the burger and how practical and filling it is.Furthermore, the bright green lettuce and pickles stand out to convey a subtle message that  the burger is not processed but instead it is healthy, (although this may deviate from the truth). The yellow colour of the cheese has connotations of happiness to subconsciously make the audience associate the burger with happiness. The san-serif font at the top is a deliberate choice to make the product deviate from the thought that McDonald's food is cheap and prepared badly but instead to convey the message that it is lovingly prepared and good for you.                                                                                                                                                                                                                 Extension task: I agree to some extent that Plan B presents a positive view of young people because on the one hand, he explains why some young people rebel and talked about how he changed and he wanted to help the youth with opportunities so they could stay on the right track but on the other hand, he proves the stereotype that young people are misbehaved and less educated because he was excluded from school.

On the one hand, he is still made something of himself and made a film on a small project and started a film and then gave poor children a chance so that they too could make something of themselves so in that respect, he deviates from negative stereotype that young people are just a drain on society

On the other hand, he did get excluded from school and if he was more educated, he would set a better example for the young people who aspire to be like him.

An exploration of Audience Power - an essay by Emmanuela Adebisi

"The internet has given the audience much more power than ever before" To what extent do you agree?                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                            The internet has had a huge impact on the media and audiences, in this essay,I will explore the the argument that the internet has increased audience power. Firstly I would like to present my stance on the matter, I agree with this statement to some extent as the internet has given the audience abilities that they had never received before but in some respects. However, it has made many industries redundant in many, especially young people's lives and the audience has no power as to what happens if the quality of television decreases regardless of whether they contribute to these industries or not.                                                                                                                                                                      One industry that has been seriously impacted by the rise of the internet is the television industry. For example, the BBC is experiencing a serious decline in ratings and less people than ever before are paying for a television licence. This allows viewers to watch BBC content without the hindrance of advertising. Since most people use BBC,an online streaming service,to watch BBC content there may be a serious regression in regard to the quality of the content as the budget will inevitably decrease. On the other hand, online streaming services such as BBC iplayer and Netflix are significantly more affordable and accessible for the average viewer.Furthermore, these streaming websites allow audiences to rate  television shows and movies and comment their opinions so that they are known by the creators of the content.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                             However, online streaming services such as Netflix and BBC iplayer allow audiences to rate the content that they're being showed so the producers of content can see how audiences are responding to their creations- this significantly broadens the role of the audience as now it is easier to be an active member of the audience instead of passive furthermore many streaming services such as Netflix create their own content which merges the roles of producer and an online service that allows the consumer to view content.
Another reason as to why I would agree with this statement is the internet has created the role of the prosumer which is when the consumer produces their own content and does not rely on media organisations to create content for them. A clear example of this is the website YouTube which allows people to make fan videos or their own original content close to professional levels with high level editing prominent in modern videos. This has created a new type of viewing experience as content creators can communicate directly with their viewers in various ways such and response videos and comments.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                           However it could be argued that audiences have just been fooled into the opinion that they have more power as they still rely on large organisations in order to post original content and the average everyday person cannot create a website from scratch without the help of large cooperation that are probably  do not have an abundance of young people working for them therefore, the middle aged, majority male, majority Caucasian CEO s  are still the people controlling our media and the representations of ordinary people are just figureheads and they can only earn a fraction of what the bosses are earning but they are the faces of social media.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                           A major disadvantage of the rise of the internet is that incorrect news can be widely spread before authentic news sources can cover a story. This is evident on the social media platform Twitter where blue check marks are awarded to authentic people with a large following, many people with these are completely trusted when reporting 'facts' that have not been carefully reported and investigated because doing so would remove the instantaneous aspect of breaking news that is widely craved and expected. Moreover, people are no longer willing to pay for news papers because they are receiving news faster through online platforms for virtually no money.Even those who are aware of the consequences of not doing so are blinded by the convenience and availability that the internet offers.                                                                                                                                                                        In opposition to this, news is now available on many more platforms and many newspaper companies have now switched to online forums as their main form of news so it could be argued that the news industry has not lost a significant amount of money due to the rise of the internet as many have just converted rather than becoming redundant therefore companies just need to adjust to the changing times and not give up their organisations completely.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                       To summarise,I agree to some extent with the notion that the internet has given audiences more power as it has in some respects but in others it has relinquished them as I have previously stated but ultimately,I think its up to individuals to give themselves power by being more active as an audience member themselves.

Audience Theory task

1) A passive audience is used to describe audiences who don't interact with the media product.                                                                                                                                                                                2)An active audience is an audience that does interact with the media product.                                                                                                                                                                                                          3)The hypodermic needle theory states that all audiences are passive and absorb all of the information the media bestows on them without any thought. This was believed in the 1930s when the media became more prominent in society.                                                                                                            4)           INFORMATION/SURVEILLANCE                                                                                           The national geographic because it informs people about wildlife                                                                       IDENTITY                                                                                                                                    East-enders because it shows the lives of working class Londoners so a lot of people can relate to it.                    DIVERSION/ENTERTAINMENT                                                                                            Call of Duty because it is totally unlike everyday life so the player can switch off from their lives and immerse themselves in the game.                                                                                                                        RELATIONSHIPS                                                                                                                          The Thor movie franchise as many people are attached to the characters Thor and Loki as well as the actors Tom Hiddleston and Chris Hemsworth.                                                                                          5) The relaxing music helps people switch off from their everyday lives and totally immerse themselves in the world of blue planet. Furthermore, the vibrant colours highlight how interesting and different the underwater world is compared to ours.David Attenborough's soothing voice brings people together as he is a national treasure who has trademarked his voice.

Film Shots Analysis

This shot is a medium close up that shows the protagonist's opposition. They all have

This shot is a close up that depicts the protagonist's countenance. His furrowed eyebrows show how perplexed he is with the situation he is in (being hunted down by his former team mates). This shot was used to show a bit of the run-down background and the costume the character is wearing which does not match his surroundings. This subtly conveys the hierarchical inequalities that still exist in a futuristic world and that if John is arrested, this could be taken away from him before he even commits a crime. The dark colour scheme helps to emphasise this serious tone.

TV show clip analysis

At 0.20 seconds into the clip, as slow pan is used to reveal the 5 bullies who are standing opposite the protagonists. This creates suspense as the audience will want to know who/what is being revealed. A high angled shot at 0.24 follows this to show the protagonists as being powerless and vulnerable which foreshadows the event that takes place afterwards which is the main characters being drenched in slushies. After this, another high angled long shot occurs to show that they are still powerless. At 0.42 seconds into the clip, there is a subtle low medium shot to show the power and status the bullies have over the protagonists and a medium shot is used  to show how tall the antagonists are and this creates a sense of weariness in the audience.

Fake Friends~A short story by Emmanuela,Cerys,Fatima and Arylae

We used a wide shot here so the background is shown. In this shot two friends are talking over-looking the balcony. The traces of red are used to for shadow the nature of this story.

We used an over-the-shoulder shot here to show the scene from one of the characters' point of view. The girl is hearing her friend gossip about her other friend.
This is another over-the-shoulder shot,This time from the fake friend's point of view. The friend is hugging her companion with an evil smirk on her face showing her duplicitous nature while her friend is oblivious.
We used a medium shot here to convey the next part of the plot. The person on the left is revealing the truth about the one on the left's best friend that she hugged in an earlier shot.
The girl who gossiped about her friend in earlier shots, is alone at break time and regretting her decision. This was taken at a high angle to maker look powerless.
The next shot is a medium close up that depicts the character on the left picking a fight with her former companion.
The protagonist (me) is being hurt by this and is confused as to why her friend was attacking her as she (played by Fatima) was in the wrong. We used another medium close up to emphasise the distress on the person on the left's face.
The protagonist finally fights back and pushes her ex-friend off of her.It is only then when the differences in height between the two characters are revealed and the protagonist is taller than the antagonist which is unconventional.
A high shot is used here to show that the antagonist has been defeated and has now lost her two friends.

This is a low shot to depict the protagonist as powerful as she had won the brawl. There are no more shades of red, only blues and greens to symbolise the end of bad intentions.

Reflection

I feel that my oasis task has been the strongest piece of work so far, I think my weakest has definitely been  the film poster analysis as I was unsure at what to do.I think I can improve by checking all of the aspects of my work and seeing if I could add some more details.

Advert of my choice analysis

Image result for oasis advert 2017 Denotations                                                                      The denotations of this advert are that there is a vibrant magenta colour (reminiscent of the flesh of a watermelon) identical to the drink colour as the most prominent colour used in the advert.                                                                                                                                            Connotations/Analysis                                                                                                                             The vibrant magenta colour is associated with summer fun and the satire and irony present in the advert creates a tone of light-heartedness and humour whilst also being memorable. The bright blue also has connotations of summer fun and festivals to make the drink be associated with good times. The bold, large, white font is a contrast to the the darker colours used and makes it eye catching which makes the advert even more memorable. Also the fact that the oasis bottle is smaller than the text  makes the audience feel less bombarded by advertising, this is a subtle way of making the audience more open to being advertised to.

Advert Analysis by Emmanuela Adebisi                                                                                                                                                                                        Denotations                                                                                                             The young boy is frowning and the text on the wall beside him is large and slightly curved and have the appearance of being old and worn down.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                               Connotations                                                                                                                The colour white that is used for the text symbolises death. This shows the audience how destitute the boy's situation is. The boy's sky blue tee-shirt and slightly rounded font creates a tone of youthfulness showing that his young life may be ripped away from him if he doesn't receive aid.

Poster Analysis

Image result for men in black posterThis is the poster for the first Men In Black movie. The font is bold and large and modern-this is a conventional trait for an action movie poster and the black, tailored suits and expensive looking sunglasses reminiscent of the "James Bond" franchise gives the audience a glimpse of the tone of this movie- action packed and thrilling. The poster has a generally monochromatic colour scale emphasising the serious sides to the movie but the skin tone of the protagonist (played by Will Smith) is the colour that stands out the most which highlights how un-conventional it is in Hollywood to have an African-American lead protagonist and makes this movie poster stand out.                                                 LR                                                                                                                                   Language                                                                                                                          The word "black" has connotations of seriousness and the bold modern font shows the audience that this is an action movie.

#10 questions

1) I am really creative, I love designing anything like costumes and movie posters (especially horror ones) and I'd love to learn how to create fonts and use photo-shop.                                                                                                                                                                                                                             2) I've never been good with computers and I'd love to learn how to edit and get confident with photo-shop.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                     3) I would really like to achieve an 8 or a 9 even though I know it will be difficult.                                                                                                                                                                                                   4) I just re-watched the 'Bad Education' series.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                              5) It was a candid representation of state school life (with a few funny exaggerations) many people could relate to it.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                             6) I used my iPhone to read an article of the pay gap between BBC reporters depending on their gender.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                           7) I usually use my phone to access the media.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                           8) *                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                 9) Sherlock is portrayed as curt and focused on his work this subverts from the usual main character in dramas who is usually depicted as larger than life and either extremely rude or very social.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                      10) The mysterious element would draw viewers in as they'd want to know if he solved the case.
